For those who cherish the past, Edgartown presents an architectural memorial to whaling's golden age. An hour of free time is allocated for you to stroll around in Edgartown.
Portland, Maine
- Civil War Fort & Lobster Bake: Board a private boat and cruise beautiful Casco Bay on your way to a private island where you will be treated to a genuine "Downeast" Maine lobster bake and a tour of an historic Civil War fort. You will tour House Island and Fort Scammel, originally built to defend Portland against the British, but later used to defend the North against the South. Explore the 70 gun casements, subterranean vaults, archways, tunnels and circular stairways of this unique fort. House Island was one of the first islands in Casco Bay to be inhabited and records of the island date back to 1661. After you've worked up an appetite by touring the fort, you will treated to a feast comprised of a 1.25lb Maine lobster, clam chowder or steamed clams, corn on the cob, salad, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverages. All of this in the middle of beautiful Casco Bay with magnificent views of Portland and surrounding islands! For the non-lobster- eater, steak or chicken can be substituted. Alcoholic beverages are not available on the island.
Halifax, Nova Scotia
- Titanic Tour: The Halifax Connection: Your tour will encompass all aspects of Halifax's connection to the events surrounding the sinking of the Titanic, including the historic pier from where the cable ships were dispatched to pick up victims, the churches where memorial services were held, the temporary morgue sites which housed bodies of such wealthy victims as John Jacob Astor, and Fairview Cemetery, where rows upon rows of identical gravestones, laid out in the shape of a ship's hull, mark the final resting place of 150 victims. Hear the stories of two Halifax citizens who traveled on Titanic, and immerse yourself in marine history at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which houses an excellent permanent exhibit on the disaster, featuring many previously unpublished photographs, as well as the world's largest collection of wooden artifacts--including a post from the Grand Staircase and the only intact Titanic deck chair in the world.
