Surrounded by mountains on three sides, this booming Turkish city is located on a gulf fed by several streams. Near the port of Izmir, a city worth exploring is ancient Ephasus, a major site of archeological excavation. It was once a Roman provincial capital and trading center and is home to several of Christendom's holiest sites. Visit the Great Theater where St. Paul preached, the ruins of Ephesus' Basilica that cover the tomb of Christ's most beloved disciple, St. John the Apostle, and the House of the Virgin Mary that the Vatican has recognized as her final resting place.
